At the beginning of the relationship between client and solicitor, it is vital that there is a transparent process in how the fee for an engagement is agreed. Fees can be fixed, partially fixed, contingent or based on an hourly rate. If an hourly rate is agreed, the solicitor should provide a detailed budget for the case but with built-in contingencies.
