One of the hats I wear is as Non Exec Director of Baird & Co

One of the hats I wear is as Non Exec Director of Baird & Co, precious metals refiners and dealers. Big debate about gold and bitcoins , both of which are currency with no intrinsic value. Difference is that you can touch gold, store it in a safe place and know that your investment is properly regulated ! Interesting article on this in Business Insider today.

More news from the front line

More news from the front line. It now  takes about 10-15 working days for the Admin Court to issue a JR Claim. meanwhile, HMRC sit on £1.8  million of the client's money. At a time when HMG should be encouraging clients to do business in the U.K, the court system is so starved of money, the system grinds to a halt.

It seems Uber's in house counsel has resigned over the sensational news that Uber kept quiet for months over the hacking of their system and the hacker's access to the personal data of millions of customers and drivers. It appeared to happen in the U.S but, if here, a serious and substantial breach of data protection principles.

More on my saga with the Central London County Court. at last 2 months after the case was transferred from the High Court, we now have a directions hearing on 28 April-nearly 6 months away. Next unpleasant task-tell the client.  Shocking and disgraceful.

More nonsense from the front line !

More nonsense from the front line ! I have clients who are involved in highly contentious proceedings in the Derby County Court, which are themselves part of a much bigger picture. The Claimant's solicitors forgot to pay the court fee and the trial due this coming Friday vacated. We had a witness coming from abroad and were 80% sure of winning. The solicitors, who are a large national firm, have applied for relief from sanctions and the application is to be heard in January. We would have preferred the trial to go ahead. By their negligence the solicitors have gained a huge tactical advantage-I actually wonder whether it was negligence or deliberate ? In any event, our ludicrous court procedure has played straight into their hands.

high court demands

The High Court has demanded that further cuts be made to costs of over £1.6m claimed by Eversheds, overruling a costs judge. Mrs Justice Slade said the amount claimed by Eversheds from litigation client Mark Harrison was 4.8 times higher than the firm’s first estimate and about 2.9 times more than a second. 4.8 times higher??!! As Taffy Dare from Captain Caveman And The Teen Angels would exclaim, "Zowie Cavey!"

The Ministry of Justice announces that they are opening a new fraud and cyber crime court

The Ministry of Justice announces that they are opening a new fraud and cyber crime court in the city at a time when justice is slow, unresponsive and almost non-existent in many county courts. In his infinite wisdom a Chancery Master transferred my clients claim for £700k to the Bermuda Triangle known as the Central London County Court. That was 5 weeks ago and I have heard nothing about the promised Case Management Conference. What the Government want in the post Brexit world is for London to be the hub for global oligarchs to fight their cases and ordinary businesses can just rot!
